Jay Boy Adams is a long-forgotten footnote to the Lubbock music scene of the 1970s, the same scene that brought the world the Flatlanders axis and, slightly later, the Maines Brothers Band (and still later than that, Lloyd Maines' somewhat more world-famous daughter Natalie). He released two minor country-rock albums on Atlantic in the late '70s, and after they sank without a trace, he moved into the business side of music and stayed there. The Shoe Box comes along almost exactly 30 years after Adams' first two records, and like them, it's a genial but not earth-shattering.

James Wallace "Jay Boy" Adams (born December 8, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Lubbock and San Antonio, Texas, known particularly for storytelling in his songs. Adams was born in Fort Worth but reared in Colorado City, the seat of Mitchell County south of Snyder in West Texas, where his father was the local Chevrolet dealer and a rancher. Shoe Box" is a song by Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, released as a single from their 1995 album, Born on a Pirate Ship. It is notable for being featured on the first soundtrack to the television series Friends, as well as the last track on the band's Born on a Pirate Ship album (added at the last minute). The song was also recorded and mixed for the band's live album, Rock Spectacle, but was ultimately left off. Music video.

Jay Boy Adams, who toured with ZZ Top, The Band, Jackson Browne, The Marshall Tucker Band, Joe Cocker and other arena-filling acts in the 1970s and 80s, is back with a new album, The Shoe Box. The new CD has already become a Top Five hit at Americana Radio and also spawned an extensive tour as special guest for the legendary Stephen Stills, not only opening the show, but also playing some guitar and singing back-up vocals as part of Stills’ band. The independent Rockin’ Heart/Smith Entertainment Records release represents the first new music from the West Texas native in many years.

Jay Boy Adams' music has always represented a resonant mixture of country, rock and blues, while remaining steeped in the tradition. A native of Colorado City, Texas, Adams grew up with the same sorts of influences that fueled the music of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Terry Allen and Butch Hancock, all of whom hailed from nearby Lubbock. In 1972, Adams was signed to a management contract by legendary Texas music manager Bill Ham. Ham put Adams on the road opening for ZZ as a solo act and taking care of Billy Gibbons guitars. Following a break working in other parts of the music business, Adams released The Shoe Box (produced by Adams and Monty Byrom of Big House fame) in 2007, an album that ended up as the Americana album of the year. The Adams/Byrom production team worked together again on the new album Let It Go.
