Complete your Mellow Candle collection. Do not cry, for all your leaden tears graced a lorded man whose gift was all too free, he came to fall upon a faithless smile, leaning eyes towards the clay. The songs have a feeling of fairytales about them and Mellow Candle is a troupe of medieval bards telling fabulous stories to the gorgeous music. Tell me, show me, teach me where you've been did you see shadows of unicorns? Did you wear laurels or a crown of thorns?

Swaddling Songs is the only studio album released by Irish progressive folk band Mellow Candle. The album is noted for its multi layered vocal harmonies and complex arrangements. Over time, the album has been regarded a classic of the progressive folk scene. Heaven Heath" (Alison Williams) – 3:00. Sheep Season" (Clodagh Simonds, A. Williams, David Williams) – 5:01. Silversong" (Simonds) – 4:26. The Poet and the Witch" (Simonds) – 2:51. Messenger Birds" (A. Williams) – 3:38.

Luckily, the strength of the music holds up beyond its scarcity. Not merely electric updates of lost traditional numbers, the album works because it establishes a voice and a sound that is truly compelling

Swaddling Songs is a music studio album recording by MELLOW CANDLE (Prog Folk/Progressive Rock) released in 1972 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. Too bad Mellow Candle weren’t able to make more of a go of things back then, but this album leaves an impressive and lasting legacy. Highly recommended to prog folk fans for sure.

According to the booklet that comes with the 2008 reissue CD, Mellow Candle’s only album, Swaddling Songs, was at one point the single most sought after major label folk rarity of all time. While these booklets can be expected to exaggerate (for example, later on in that same paragraph it calls the album ‘a genuine masterpiece’ which could be considered a slight exaggeration perhaps) this is probably true. On its release in 1972 Swaddling Songs was totally ignored.

Every time I sit down and listen to this album, I'm so impressed with what the group and these two girls achieved 46 years ago. How was it possible for these young people to create such fluid and distinctive music? To me it's a mystery. In any case, this is one of the best British folk rock albums that was made in the early 70's.
