Altgeld eventually opened a law practice in Chicago, and became a real estate developer, and local judge before being elected governor. He was married to Emma Ford. Often in poor health, he died at the age of 54, while working in the law office of Clarence Darrow. John Peter Altgeld was born in the German village of Nieder Selters on December 30, 1847. When he was about three months old, his parents brought him to the United States, settling in Ohio. After a brief stint in the Union Army during the Civil War, Altgeld read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1872. He served as city attorney of Savannah, Missouri and in 1874, was elected county prosecutor. He resigned this post after a year and moved to Chicago, where he established himself as a lawyer.
John Peter Altgeld, (born December 30, 1847, Selters, Nassau -died March 12, 1902, Joliet, Illinois, . reformist Democratic governor of Illinois (1893–97) known principally for his pardon (June 26, 1893) of German-American anarchists involved in the Haymarket Riot, a labour protest meeting in which seven Chicago policemen were killed at Haymarket Square on May 4, 1886. Altgeld’s German parents immigrated to Ohio, where he was reared. In the 1870s he moved to Chicago, where he soon accumulated a small fortune in real estate.
