It closes with his Bartókian Concerto for String Orchestra, written when he was a bit past 30. And in the middle is his sui generis Concerto for Organ, String Orchestra, and Timpani written when he was a bit past 40. Always tonal, usually lyrical, and often dramatic, Leighton's music fits comfortably into the more conservative side of the postwar English modernist world, and will likely appeal to listeners who enjoy Arnold, Berkeley and Rawsthorne. His ability to shape Leighton's symphony and concertos into cogent and appealing aesthetic wholes is as impressive as his ability to elicit polished playing from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in works with which they could hardly have been familiar. Organist John Scott covers himself with glory in the knotty keyboard writing of the Organ Concerto, particularly in the truly awe-inspiring final moments of the work's closing Choral and Variations.

The Concerto for String Orchestra (1961), with its contrapuntal techniques, dissonance and chromaticism, bears witness to Leighton's studies in Italy with the avant-garde composer Goffredo Petrassi, but the underlying romanticism evident in the early Symphony for Strings remains. His penchant for lyricism is something which, in fact, Leighton never lost. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Richard Hickox performs splendidly throughout, and John Scott (who, like Leighton, was a boy chorister at Wakefield Cathedral) is an excellent exponent of the concerto for organ. 8 people found this helpful.

Concerto for Organ, String Orchestra and Timpani, Op. 58 (1970). This disc contains the Organ Concerto, with John Scott as soloist, the Concerto for String Orchestra and the early Symphony for Strings. Leighton grew up in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, where he received his earliest musical inspiration as a chorister in the Cathedral and discovered the possibilities of the organ. Richard Hickox conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the first of a series devoted to Leighton’s music. Hickox and the BBC NOW likewise do full justice to the Concerto for String Orchestra that Leighton completed in September 1961.
Even in this outstanding 2006 Chandos recordings of his A Colour Symphony and Violin Concerto, it’s nearly impossible to identify the composer. Richard Hickox, arguably the finest contemporary English conductor, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, surely one of the better of the BBC’s national orchestras, turn in an exciting performance of the four-movement A Colour Symphony and Lydia Mordkovitch, a former Oistrakh pupil who makes her home in England, turns in an incredibly virtuosic performance of the three-movement Violin Concerto
