Lost Python
It starts with lots of fun - charts-compatible Electro-Swing and R & B meets amazing vocal arrangements and Al Jarreau will do what he's best at. He surfs on the complex beats, building small variations and is still one of the best rhythmic singers on this planet. The sophisticated arrangements, stunning backing vocals and vocal arrangements by Siedah Garret and a perfectionist production by Paul Brown (with a clear emphasis on synthesizers) cause fun and make you dance. But already in the mid-tempo duet with Joe Cocker "Lost And Found" it's becoming apparent, that Jarreau's voice is not for ballads. It does not have the volume, not the timbre to deliver slower songs. The ballads in the second half of this album are not only extremely schmalzy arranged, but this wonderful singer simply seems to be not in his element with slower tracks. And it did not need the muliple overdubbed acappella insert at the end - "Route 66" is not just a pretty boring Gassenhauer, but the arrangement of Jarreau also acts statically and eager as if he has to prove the world that not only Bobby McFerrin can deliver such songs. Anyway the first 5 tracks already make this album's worth - he is so good at rhythmic pop music.
